When You Need to Be Heard, Counselling Can Offer a Safe Space

One thing I’ve noticed since practising as a Counsellor, is how rarely we are truly listened to without someone responding by sharing their own story or experience.

Often, this is well-intentioned — a way of connecting and saying, “I understand.” But sometimes, without meaning to, it can leave the person sharing feeling unheard, minimised, silenced or invalidated. It can even feel like a competition over who has suffered more.

Likewise, when someone we care about is struggling, we often try to reassure them with words such as, “Look on the bright side,” “You’ll get through this,” or “Someone else has it worse.” These words are usually intended to comfort, but they can unintentionally move us away from simply being present with what someone is feeling.

A Safe, Non-Judgemental Space to Talk

Counselling, or 'talking therapy' offers something different.

As counsellors, we are trained to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about your thoughts, feelings and experiences without being compared, “trumped” or pressured to find a solution.

You don’t need to fix everything before you come to counselling. You don’t need to minimise what you’re experiencing or convince yourself that things could be worse.

The focus is on you, in the here and now.

For me, counselling is about supporting clients to listen to themselves and develop a greater understanding of what they need — without being overly concerned with what other people think, feel or believe they should be feeling.

Sometimes, simply having the opportunity to speak honestly and be genuinely heard can be incredibly valuable.

You are the most important person in the room.
